Notes for the 09-20-04 Harmony in My Head Show.

I have wanted to play some jazz on the show for awhile. I didnt know how you all would dig
it, not to say that you cant get to jazz music but all the same, I didnt know so I didnt until now. As I write this at this late hour, I want to play some more Ornette Coleman. Ill rock the Ornette when I get to the office a few hours from now. I think tonights show was a good one. It doesnt have a lot to do with me, I let the music do the talking.
From all the letters I got over the last week, it seems that you enjoy when Heidi comes on the show and that you are feeling the loss of Johnny Ramone. Me too. Until next time, thanks for listening and have a great week. --Henry

Miles Davis Rated X: From the Get Up with It album. Miles is playing organ on this track. I thought it would be kind of cool to play Miles and there be no trumpet. Great drummer Sim Cain turned me onto this record many years ago. Theres a lot of great Miles stuff from this era. I have none of his come back albums like Tutu but I have all the other stuff and while theres some records of his I like more than others but theres no Miles records that arent pretty amazing.

Slim Gaillard The Hip Cowboy: This is off the Japanese version of his best of on Verve. The US version doesnt have it for some reason. I have all the Slim CDs I have ever seen and this is the only one that has this track. A great track. Some cool Slim sites http://www.pocreations.com/slimbio1.html

Eric Dolphy Out There: From the album Out There. I am not qualified to write about Eric Dolphy. What a man. In the early sixties, he was in Coltranes unit and if you listen to Coltrane before and after Dolphys tenure in the band, you can tell who rubbed off on whom. I think Dolphy was as good as any of the great players of his time. His own records are great, the live boots of the European shows he did with Coltrane are insane and then theres the summer of 1964 when he toured with Charles Mingus. Theres some great shows on boot CDs from radio broadcasts. Dolphy is playing sax, flute and clarinet all in one show. Hes as good as it gets. Dolphy died in 1964.

Johnny Hartman & John Coltrane Lush Life: This is from the Coltrane and Hartman album on Impulse. Great song by Billy Strayhorn. I dont know much about Johnny Hartman. I have tried to find out about him before but theres not a great deal that I have been able to find. Hartman did a lot of records. I started checking out many years ago. Another good Hartman album on Impulse is I Just Dropped by to Say Hello.

Ornette Coleman Free: From the Change of the Century album. Theres a great boxset, Beauty is a Rare Thing thats a must. This track has Don Cherry on it, hes another monster player. I had a great time a few weeks ago playing the boxset in its entirety.

Stan Getz & Astrud Gilberto - Girl from Ipanema: From the Getz/Gilberto album. A bit of a classic. I have been hearing this one since I was young. I got the record on CD years ago and a few years ago, it was released again, all remastered. Its a beautiful record. I have not played this one in awhile and it was good to hear it again tonight.

Billy Eckstine Caravan: One of the great jazz singers. This is off the Everything I Have is Yours 2CD set. It hit me one day that I had no Eckstine and I better take care of that. I got this CD and became quite the fan. I dont know a great deal about him but this CD set is easy to find and hes so great.

William Shatner I Cant Get Behind That: This is off Bills new album Has Been. Im on this one as well. I didnt know it was out yet, I found out when I got to the station tonight and Engineer X brought it in. So, I guess its out now for real. I heard Bill on Stern the other day and they were making fun of him and he was being a good sport about it. I dont think he really cares what Howard Stern or anyone else thinks. I had a great time hanging out with him. Hes a blast.

Phil Lynott - Dear Miss Lonely Hearts: This is off Phils album Solo in Soho. Theres a lot of different music on this record. You get the feeling that he really wanted to try a lot of different stuff, perhaps he was feeling pent up after all the years rockin out with Lizzy. This is a very Lizzy like track. Great one from the great one.

The Maniacs You Dont Break My Heart: From the Live at the Vortex album. I have played a lot songs from this record. It was one of my favorite albums of 1979. Not much on this band, they werent around long enough. http://www.punk77.co.uk/groups/maniacs.htm

Black Randy I Slept in an Arcade: One of the great bands of Los Angeles. This single is on Dangerhouse, one of the great LA punk labels. All the Black Randy stuff is collected on one CD named after their album Pass the Dust I Think Im Bowie. The CDs in print and really worth it.

Gene Defcon Shes on MTV: From the Come Party with Me 2000 CD. Gene is also known as Otto Matik from the Prima Donnas. Gene sent me this the other day, good thing he did. I had no knowledge of his new thing. Its a great record. I went looking on the internet and found that hes got a few records out. I got them all and eagerly await their arrival. This album has 47 songs on it. Available on Amazon.com. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00004U0P3/qid%3D1095749364/sr%3D11-1/ref%3Dsr%5F11%5F1/103-4364136-7365405
Suicide Ghost Rider: From the Punk Legends CD. This is an alt. version that Ive only heard on this comp. Really cool.

The Moving Sidewalks Flashback: From the Flash album. Pre ZZ Top Billy Gibbons. I have had this one for a long time. The Sidewalks opened for Jimi Hendrix at one point. I cant find much on this band but the CD is totally worth it if you like what you heard here.

Ramones Life is a Gas: From the Adios Amigos album. I always thought this song was sad somehow, like Joey was saying goodbye. I dont know, something about the melody and lyric. I asked Johnny about it and he said that it wasnt supposed to be a sad song.

Arthur Alexander Everyday I Have to Cry: From the Lonely Just Like Me album. Recommended to me by the great Chris Morris of Billboard Magazine. This is a collection of songs he had recorded years before. This came out right after he died. I will always wonder if this album might have gotten him restarted on his career. Heres a good info page on the man. http://www.fame2.com/fame/alexande.htm

The Wall Exchange: I had their singles for a long time before I found out they had albums out. This song and Ghetto are my two favorite songs by The Wall. Its been awhile since Ive listened to them. I went looking around on the net for more info on them and found out theres a CD comp. on Captain Oi of some of their stuff. I just ordered it and well give it a listen one of these weeks after it comes in.

Sham 69 Give a Dog a Bone: The b-side off the Youre a Better Man than I. Great song. I have been listening to Sham since 1979. The albums Tell Us the Truth, Thats Life and Hersham Boys are great. All the singles from them are great as well. One of the great UK punk/oi bands. They had a really intense following of skinheads that often got out of control. Led by frontman Jimmy Pursey, the band became quite famous in the late 70s and early 80s. I saw them in NYC in 1979 at Hurrahs. Ian and I hung out with Pursey after the show and that was a big deal. Stiv Bators came out and sang If the Kids Are United with them for the encore.

Iggy Pop Girls: From the New Values album. Recently remastered with extra tracks. Its awesome, a must-have. Hes the man.

Richie Havens Run Shaker Life: The CD that I have of Havens seems to be out of print. Theres a lot of other ones and I dont know any of them. I remember seeing him in the Woodstock movie. When I wanted to check him out, this was the one CD that I could find. A great and powerful voice.

Thanks for listening.
